Adults can be defined as animals or human beings which have attained their maximum growth and development. Adults are social concepts and a legal one within the world of humans. As opposed to "minor" (or "non-adult" an legal adult refers to a person that has reached the age of majority. They are regarded as competent, responsible and independent. The word "major" can be used to describe these individuals. It is generally accepted that the age at which a person becomes a legal adult is 18. But, it can vary depending on legal rights and the country of origin as well as the development of the individual's psychological.

Adulthood refers to the period in human life when an individual has reached maturity both in physical and mental growth. The age of adulthood typically begins at an age that is 21. The middle age stage, which begins approximately 40 years of age then follows by old age at about 60 years. Early adulthood begins between the ages of 18 and 30. The middle age stage begins from the mid-30s through to the 60s. The transition to late adulthood begins around the middle of 60s. As we enter the initial phases of adulthood (between 20 and 40) then our bodies have reached their full maturity although our height and weight may rise slightly. The physical abilities of our bodies are at their peak at the age of young adulthood. This includes muscle strength in addition to reflex time, the sensitivities, and functioning of the heart.
